Lacona, the green and blue heart of Elba
In the heart of the island of Elba, where the sea meets the Mediterranean scrub, lies Lacona and its wide, sandy bay. Dominating the landscape is the long, striking Stella Peninsula, a stretch of wild land reaching out into the sea, dividing Lacona's beach from the more secluded Margidore.
Behind it, countryside planted with vineyards and olive groves rises gently towards the hills that embrace the bay, forming a natural amphitheatre of rare beauty.
It's in spring and autumn that Lacona reveals its most intense charm: the air fills with the scent of the Mediterranean scrub, the green fields take on golden and amber tones, and the clearer, more slanted light paints the landscape in colours that look straight out of a painting.
Lacona is a true paradise for anyone who loves the sea in all its forms. Sailing and windsurfing schools, diving centres, boat trips and rental of boats and dinghies offer a professional service for every level of experience, while SUP boards, canoes and pedalos are perfect for those after something more laid-back along the coast.
Beyond this long sandy beach, there's also Laconella, sandy and completely free to access, with a few large rocks fanning out into the crystal-clear water, and Margidore, a mix of gravel and sand, quiet, with a small harbour on its right-hand side.
The Capo di Stella peninsula also has a few small beaches only reachable by sea, the largest just past Lacona on the left-hand side.
But Lacona isn't only about the sea: those who love authentic nature will find plenty of trails here for trekking and mountain biking, both on the Capo Stella headland and on the hills behind it, where every walk rewards you with breathtaking views, the sea always taking centre stage on the horizon.
For families, Lacona is also home to a branch of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, with activities and educational workshops designed specifically to introduce children to Elba's natural world.
Thanks to its central position, Lacona is also the ideal starting point for exploring the whole island of Elba.
In just 10 minutes by car, you can reach some of the most beautiful and lively spots: from Portoferraio, the main town rich in Napoleonic history, to Porto Azzurro with its picturesque little harbour, to Capoliveri, a medieval village perched among its narrow lanes, and Marina di Campo, with its buzzing nightlife and golden beaches. One single base from which to experience the whole spirit of Elba, in every direction.
